Basketball Opportunities

The University of Huddersfield and the West Yorkshire Hawks are collaborating to establish an elite performance basketball program at the university. This initiative is tailored to allow student athletes to balance their academic pursuits while continuing to play basketball at a high level.

As a student athlete in the basketball program, you will have access to the best basketball facilities in the county, including an 850-seat arena where the University teams and the West Yorkshire Hawks play their home games. If selected for the university’s first team, you will receive:

Weekly university team training
Opportunity to compete in the BUCS basketball league
Additional development training sessions each week
Opportunity to train and play for the West Yorkshire Hawks national league team
Free gym membership (valued at £190)
Strength and conditioning sessions
Group workshops on performance lifestyle, nutrition, and sports psychology
SU club membership (valued at £75)
Performance athlete kit bundle

Depending on your ability and prior experience, additional scholarships are available for elite athletes, providing increased support and financial aid of either £250 or £1,000

Scholarships

We offer basketball scholarships to talented students who wish to fulfil their sporting ambitions whilst studying for a degree. If you are competing at regional or international level, you could be eligible for a scholarship.

Scholars at the University of Huddersfield benefit from a bespoke, individualised support programme that focuses on progressing you in your sport, alongside your studies. Within the programme, you will work with Sport Scientists, Performance Coaches, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Performance Lifestyles Advisors, and Physiotherapists.

Criteria

A University of Huddersfield full-time or part-time undergraduate/postgraduate student, OR a prospective student who has received a conditional/unconditional offer and is commencing study in September 2024.
Elite Pathway player - evidenced through squad selection in the past 2 years and playing for a competitive club (for overseas applications, the standard must be equivalent to that of the UK).

Criteria

A University of Huddersfield full-time or part-time undergraduate/postgraduate student, OR a prospective student who has received a conditional/unconditional offer and is commencing study in September 2024.
Home Nation senior or age group international.
Super League squad player (for overseas applications, the standard must be equivalent to that of the UK).
Elite Pathway player - 80% court time (for overseas applications, the standard must be equivalent to that of the UK).
